I believe that teaching art is a combination of instruction in art skills and theory, facilitation of the creative process, and support of personal expression. Learning to paint takes focused attention and practice. Creative expression takes opening up and letting go. Personal expression takes self exploration. All these need to exist to create good art.
Exploring the meaning of your art is a central focus of my workshops. I also work with students to develop their personal styles of expression. Acrylic paint is a wonderful, forgiving medium for this process.
Part of developing as an artist is finding ways to be kind to oneself and to learn to deal with bumps and challenges. My workshops include methods of overcoming obstacles to the creative process, including dealing with the inner critic. I work with students find ways to enjoy experimenting and stretching as they explore new ways to create.
